Localised spots: Forget the excess of melanin in your skin

Melanin is a pigment derived from tyrosine, an amino acid that keeps the whole body working properly. In our skin, melanin is produced in the melanocytes, some of the cells in the epidermis.

Melanin is the pigment that is in charge of giving colour to our hair, eyes and skin. However, an excessive production of melanin causes the appearance of spots and hyperpigmentation.

There can be different factors that cause these skin changes of spots and hyperpigmentation. The most common ones usually are:

  • Sun exposure: These spots are known as solar lentigo.
  • Age: These changes in the skin are age spots.
  • Hormonal changes: Mainly from pregnancy or contraceptives. These spots are known as melasmas.
  • Photosensitivity: Spots originating from medication and even perfume.
  • Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation: From scars or acne spots.

Types of spots or hyperpigmentation

There are two different types of spots: Generalised and localised spots.

Generalised spots are produced by an accumulation of melanin and cover a large part of the face.

On the other hand, localised spots are an accumulation of melanin in a specific zone. The most common areas are: The top lip, the cheeks or cheek bones, the forehead, the neck, the neckline or the backs of the hands.

Treatment for localised spots

MartiDerm, from within its DSP line, has two products that are ideal for the treatment of localised or persistent spots. Keep reading for all of the details.

1.DSP Mask

The DSP mask is the most intensive treatment in the product line. Its clay base has an occlusive effect which allows the active ingredients to be absorbed.

The ingredients in this mask are:

  • Kojic acid: inhibits tyrosinase activity.
  • Ellagic acid: inhibits tyrosinase activity.
  • Salicylic acid: cellular renovator.
  • Arbutin: inhibits tyrosinase activity.
  • Vitamin C: antioxidant.
  • Encapsulated licorice: antioxidant.

How do you use this mask? Once applied, the mask should be left on for a minimum of 30 minutes. You are advised to try it for a few days to test your skin’s compatibility with the product as following:

  • First day: 30 minutes.
  • Second day: 1 hour.
  • After the third day: If you do not have any adverse reactions, you can apply the mask after your routine treatment and leave it on overnight.

You can combine this mask with the DSP Illuminator Serum or the DSP Renovation Cream.

You can also use this DSP mask on persistent generalised spots. In this case, you should apply the mask to your whole face and leave on for a minimum of 30 minutes. It is not necessary to leave it on overnight. If your skin can tolerate it, you can apply it prior to the Alpha-Peeling ampoule.

Applying the Alpha-Peeling ampoule together with the DSP-Mask (for a minimum of 30 minutes) will achieve:

  • A high absorption of the depigmentation active ingredients: Thanks to the alpha-hydroxy acids in the Alpha-Peeling ampoule and the occlusive effect of the DSP mask.
  • Hydrating action from the hyaluronic acid in the Alpha-Peeling ampoule.
  • Firming action from the marine collagen in the Alpha-Peeling ampoule.
  • Depigmentation action from the active ingredients in the DSP mask.
  • Cleaning action from the clay in the DSP mask.

2. DSP Cover

DSP Cover is the ideal cream to apply during the day to localised facial or body spots, such as to the backs of the hands.

  • You can apply it whenever you want.
  • For men as well as women.
  • For all skin types.

The triple action of depigmentation, sun protection and camouflage filter with a light make-up colour makes it a great and practical solution.

The ingredients in DSP Cover are:
  • Kojic acid: inhibits tyrosinase activity.
  • Salicylic acid: cellular renovator.
  • 50+ solar filter against UVA and UVB: sun protection.
If you use make-up or creams with colour, you can apply them at the previous step as well as after to reapply the sun protection and to continue treating the spots. Whether it is spots or hyperpigmentation that affect your skin, it is essential to treat them with specific products to alleviate their effects and give your skin a healthy appearance free from alterations.
