Care for sensitive skin

Sensitive skin is a skin type that is hard to define even though it needs special care. Up to 50% of the population suffers or has suffered from sensitive skin as shown in this study. The symptoms range from redness to flaking and can occur spontaneously or after experiencing extreme temperature changes (excessive cold or humidity) or after the application of certain products that can be abrasive on this skin type.

It usually goes hand in hand with a drier skin type, therefore we will share some tips on looking after sensitive skin. We need to pay more attention to the face and above all the neck and eye contours, as these areas are especially sensitive.

How should we look after sensitive skin?

The correct and specific treatment, as well as the care routine will require:

Careful cleansing

Due to the irritability of sensitive skin, you should choose a suitable facial cleanser that reduces friction and abrasion as much as possible while still properly cleansing. The use of hypoallergenic products is recommended, as well as products that don’t contain preservatives or surfactants as they cause irritation. You should also avoid products that include cutaneous sensory stimulants or have a vasodilator effect.

Cleansing agents

For sensitive skin we recommend soap-free cleansers because they preserve the skin's barrier, produce a sensation of somatosensory relief and restore the normal hydration. Alcohol-free gels with moisturising properties are usually used.

Adequate hydration

Moisturising properly after a gentle cleansing reduces skin irritation and restores the outermost horny layer. This in turn leads to a feeling of comfort in sensitive skin, as well as reducing the common uncomfortable itching.

Anti-aging creams

One of the common components in anti-aging cream is salicylic acid that causes visible irritation to sensitive skin. However, one solution to avoid these adverse effects is to opt for emollients that contain sodium salicylate. The effect of emollients is the significant increase of collagen type 1, which is associated with anti-aging, and the significant reduction in the depth of wrinkles and the reddening of the skin.

Some of the other common components are hydroxy acids, also considered as a strong irritant. It is recommended to substitute hydroxy acids for polyhydroxy and bionic acids, because as well as having the benefits of AHA without irritating the skin, providing additional antioxidants, they strengthen and give moisture to the skin’s barrier.

Preventative treatment

It is essential that we establish what substances or circumstances in our daily life aggravate our skin. Thus, we can specifically adapt our lifestyle to make sure our skin looks bright and healthy.

If you have sensitive skin we recommend that you visit your dermatological specialist to rule out any underlying conditions such as eczema or seborrheic dermatitis. Look after your skin every day!
