Disclosed: truths and myths about the skin

The skin is the largest and one of the most delicate organs in the body . It has a volume of between 12 and 15% of our total weight and constantly rejuvenates itself: every minute we lose around 30,000 dead cells.

The skin has essential features for the proper functioning of the body; therefore it is important to keep it in good condition. Learning the truth about many skin legends will help us to know how to keep it looking radiant and firm.

4 myths and topics: what is behind them?

It is not always the treatments that we think will benefit our skin the most, which actually have the best effect on it. There are many false beliefs about this that can lead us to have bad habits. In order to solve this problem, it is important to clear up some truths and myths about the skin.

1.Hydrating cream damages oily skin. FALSE

Contrary to popular belief, oily or acne prone skin needs the same hydration as any other type of skin. An excess of sebum does not protect the dermis, which need specific products to accomplish this. In the case, hydrating creams for oily skin should be of a light texture and oil free, in other words it is oil free to avoid having the opposite effect.

2.Showing every day dries the skin. TRUE

Showering is necessary to feel fresh, clean and to get rid of sweat but doing so daily damages the skin, according to several studies. The reason is that hot water, shower gel and soap (specifically the chemical components) remove the natural oils which protect the skin and keep it hydrated. Despite a difference of opinion about how many times we should shower, the majority of experts advise once a day and consider it necessary to clean the sensitive areas, such as the genitals, hands, feet, armpits and the rest is not essential.

3.You can get rid of cellulite. FALSE

There are specific creams and treatments (such as liposuction) to reduce cellulite, a problem that affects, in varying severity, between 85 and 98% of women after puberty. However, there is not a solution which completely removes it. Even so, following some dietary guidelines (drinking abundant water, avoiding salt and oil and consume fiber), doing regular physical activity, lymph massages and applying certain products can help prevent this feminine problem which is so common.

4.Stress causes wrinkles. TRUE

Collagen is responsible for maintaining the elasticity and firmness of our skin However, in times of stress, our body increases the production of cortisol, which is a hormone that stimulates the breaking down of collagen, and therefore damages our dermis. This loss of collagen accelerates the appearance of wrinkles and expression lines. Try to avoid stress because it can have a significant impact on your health and skin.

These four beliefs (only a few of many which exist about the skin) reveal the importance of the correct daily care of our skin, accompanied by our dietary and healthy habits, to maintain a healthy and beautiful dermis.
